Class Spotlight – Second Grade
Under the charmed and skilled guidance Mrs. Kathrine Smith, Mountain Song’s Evergreen second grade class is engrossed in The King of Ireland’s Son during Main Lesson. This is an adventure story with elements of Grimm’s Fairy Tales and Gulliver’s Travels. Each day the students hear a bit more about this young man’s quest to save Ireland AND keep his head. After hearing each new adventure, the children create a beautiful picture and text to highlight the King of Ireland’s Son’s latest undertaking. By deeply engaging in this story, the students learn a variety of Language Arts concepts such as spelling, digraphs, and punctuation.
Parents, families, and friends may want to ask these second grade students about what mischief the King of Ireland’s Son has caused or escaped from today.
The Evergreen second grade’s next Main Lesson block will be a return to Arithmetic. They will keep building on skip counting, multiplication, addition, subtraction, and place value.
During their extra lesson times, math skills are being reviewed and reinforced. They also model with clay and beeswax, enjoy nature stories (ask your child what a baby swan is called), paint, create form drawings, and practice reading.
On Friday, the class will enjoy an afternoon of fort building – each child may bring in sheets or blankets to build a structure of their choosing. Buddies from the 5th and 6th grades will assist with the engineering. It will be a day of joyful and fun active learning!
